Categorization and coordinates
[edit]Hi 4300streetcar, I appreciate the Boston transit images you've been uploading. I do have two requests:
- Please use only the most specific categories available. Categories on Commons are hierarchical, so broader categories should not be added. For example, I moved File:Beacon Park Yard December 2023.jpg from Category:Rail yards in Massachusetts to the more specific Category:Beacon Park Yard, and from Category:Boston to the more specific Category:December 2023 in Boston and Category:Boston skyline in the 2020s. I recommend enabling HotCat which makes it easier to find the proper categories. If you look through your uploads, you'll see that I've corrected the categories on most of them.
- If possible, please use more exact coordinates. You've been adding three decimal digits, which is only precise to about 300 feet. In an area like Boston, this can result in the coordinates appearing to be on the wrong street. I recommend 5 digits of precision, which is pretty easier to obtain with mapping tools like Google Maps.
I'm happy to answer any questions you have about either of these - just reply here. Best, Pi.1415926535 (talk) 23:22, 31 July 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for this information - I will implement these suggestions on new uploads, and I appreciate you correcting the categories on previous uploads. 4300streetcar (talk) 04:15, 1 August 2024 (UTC)
- Great, much appreciated. For coordinates, you should use {{Location}} for the camera location, or {{Object location}} for the location of the photo subject. You can also use both if you desire, especially if you were photographing something distant or at an unusual angle. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 19:12, 1 August 2024 (UTC)
